Kangaroo Paw enjoys bright light and direct sun for optimal flowering. Indoors it should be near a brightly lit north or east facing window. Plant outdoors in morning sun to semi-shade.
Let the top 2cm of soil dry out inbetween watering. In winter, you can let the soil dry out even more, increasing watering frequency in summer when the plant is flowering. Never let the soil stay soggy, but it also doesn't like to completely dry out.
Kangaroo Paw plants are not heavy feeders so you don't need to fertilise regularly. Add some compost at the beginning of spring and slow release fertiliser pellets that promote flowering.
Re-pot every 1-2 years with a well-draining potting soil. Some added succulent mix or sand will be beneficial for good drainage.
Prune this plant right down in winter, cutting off spent flowers at the bottom of the stalk and dead leaves. This will promote bushy regrowth.
There are about 12 different species of Kangaroo Paw, each with different flowers. Some plants can produce flower spikes 3 metres tall! The tubular flowers attract birds.
