Brighten a dark spot

While we don't like to promise a plant is indestructible - this one is pretty hard to kill and will tolerate more neglect than most indoor plants. Aspidistras add a vivid and opulent feel to any interior and were prized in the Victorian era for their bold leaves. Native to the Osumi Islands of Japan. Available Gauteng only.

Comes in a 30cm plastic grow pot. Decorative pot sold separately

Caring for Axel

Light

Medium. Suitable for low light

Water & humidity

Water weekly. Regular watering is required to keep the soil moist, but Aspidistra's hate waterlogged soil. Reduce watering in winter. Normal room humidity is fine.

Feeding

Twice in summer with two sachets of our organic Canola Meal fertiliser.

Re-potting

Every second year. Re-pot in regular potting soil. They can be split and divided.

Atrium Top Tip

Use the leaves for flower arrangements; the foliage often lasts for weeks.

Quirky plant fact

The Aspidistra was a favorite indoor plant along with the Areca Palm during the Victorian Era.
