Growing Bay

Light

Bay trees like plenty of sunshine, but can also be planted in a semi-shade area.

Water & humidity

Bay Tree roots are shallow and frequent watering may be necessary during dry spells. Always allow the soil to dry out between waterings.

Feeding

Bay Trees are slow growing so don't need much fertiliser. Fertilise once at the beginning of the growing season with a nitrogen rich fish or kelp emulsion.

Re-potting

Re-pot if necessary with fresh potting soil. Only go one container size up.

Atrium Top Tip

Bay Trees can grow 15 feet tall if left to their own devices in the garden, however they are easily pruned and even make great hedges and topiaries. Growing them in a pot will contain growth.

Quirky plant fact

Bay Trees originate from the Mediterranean and were made into wreaths to crown the winners of the ancient Greek games. It is considered to be one of the oldest cultivated tree species.
