Staghorn Ferns make interesting home decor pieces on a wall or hanging from a shaded corner of the patio. Staghorn ferns are epiphytic (can live without soil), are easy to care for and thrive in warm humid conditions. A must-have for an outdoor shower, or an indoor bathroom that gets decent light.
Tip: Replace the hanging wire with fishing line to make it look like your plant is invisibly suspended

Caring for Stag

Light

Medium to bright indirect light.

Water & humidity

Staghorns prefer to dry out slightly between watering rather than being continually drenched. Soak for 15-20 minutes in a bath of water 2-3 times per week and spray with water daily in hot temperatures.

Feeding

If using fertiliser pellets you can place them underneath the basal fronds, where the plant is attached to the wooden plaque. You can also add a low dose of water solutble fertiliser when dunking your Staghorn.

Re-potting

Hmmm, now we don't think that's necessary. Although Staghorns can also grow in pots, and are often propagated in planters of well-draining light potting soil, like orchid mix.

Atrium Top Tip

Don't remove brown, flat leaves at the base of the plant—these are essential.

Quirky plant fact

The Staghorn has a thin layer of felt-like hairs on its leaves which absorb moisture. If these get rubbed off the leaf will turn brown. Staghorns have two types of fronds. The foliar fronds are also called fertile fronds, and they are erect or pendant. On the underside of the plant are the brownish reproductive structures, called sporangia which produce the spores.
