Caring for Gugu

Light

Place Gugu in indirect, bright light for best results. Not enough light will dull the colour of the flower.

Water & humidity

Water 1-2 times per week when the top layer of soil is dry. Bromeliads are air plants, absorbing moisture from the air and will benefit from regular misting. They are susceptible to root rot, so ensure the soil never remains soggy.

Feeding

Once in summer. Too much fertiliser can cause the colours to fade.

Re-potting

Bromeliads are air plants and rarely need re-potting. They prefer to be in smaller pots. If necessary, only use a specialty bromeliad potting mix, or one with good aeration like an orchid mix or potting soil with added pumice and peat moss.

Atrium Top Tip

To prevent overwatering the roots, place some water into the cup formed by the centre leaflets, which will absorb the moisture. However, periodically empty the cup to prevent the centre of the plant from rotting.

Quirky plant fact

Bromeliads only bloom once, but the flowers last a very long time. Once the bloom is spent the mother plant produces 'pups', which grow from the base of her stem and can be replanted.
