Salvias are great plants to add a splash of easy-care colour to the garden! With close to 1,000 species worldwide, salvias are members of the mint family which also includes rosemary, thyme, lavender, and basil. Ornamental salvias are also a relative of common sage, the culinary herb used for cooking.

Most varieties are native to hot, dry climates and can be grown as perennials that require little attention.

Growing Salvia

Light

Full sun. Salvias perform best in full sun and need at least 4 - 6 hours a day to bloom profusely.

Water

Salvias prefer the soil to dry out between watering. However, give your newly planted Salvia a good soaking every few days in hot summers when the soil is dry, especially if it is in a pot.

Feeding

A good handful of compost around the plant in Spring, and a sprinkle of slow release organic pellets should more than suffice for the year.

Re-potting

Salvias can be re-potted every year to a larger container. Regular well draining potting soil will do, with added fine gravel or succulent mix to help the mixture drain well.

Atrium Top Tip

Salvias tend to look a bit sad and twiggy in winter. Prune the stems right down in Spring to encourage new, full growth.

Quirky plant fact

Certain types of Salvia have been used in spirit cleansing rituals by cultures around the world. The blooms last throughout summer, attracting bees & butterflies.
