Zanzibar gem

Zara is the perfect plant for dry, low-light conditions. Originating from Africa, ZZ plants have waxy, smooth leaves that reflect sunlight and brighten a room. They're a winner for greening virtually any space and are considered by many as 'indestructible'!
ZZ plants are also a NASA top air-purifying plant, filtering xylene, benzene & toluene from the air.
Comes in a 19cm plastic grow pot. Decorative pot sold separately.
Note, ZZ plants are toxic to pets & small children if ingested

Caring for Zara

Light

Low light to dappled. Zara is extremely adaptable to low-light conditions, but can also tolerate brighter indirect sun.

Water & humidity

Water weekly. ZZ plants can tolerate a few short dry spells, but they do need water if they are to grow bigger, faster. Allow the top half of their soil to dry out between watering. The brighter the spot they're in, the more water they need. Rather keep it on the dry side if you're not sure. They're not too phased about humidity.

Feeding

Feed monthly with one sachet of our BonsaiBoost Canola Meal to get it to grow faster. Don't feed in winter.

Re-potting

When the ZZ plant is young it will likely need re-potting every year in spring. Only use a well-draining succulent potting mix with added perlite or sand.

Atrium Top Tip

If some of the bottom leaves turn yellow that's normal. If lots of leaves are turning yellow or brown & falling off, check that you're not over watering.

Quirky Plant Fact

Originally found in Kenya, Zanzibar and southern Africa, the ZZ plant is a relative of the Peace Lily. The ZZ plant has  thick, potato-like roots known as rhizomes. These store water, which is why the plant does well during droughts.
