Caring for Zinhle

Light

As much filtered light as possible for optimal flowering, exposure to soft early morning sun will also be beneficial. If your orchid is receiving enough light the leaves will be an apple green colour. Too much light = yellow leaves. Too little = dark leaves.

Water & humidity

Zygopetalums have water-storing pseudobulbs, making them more tolerant of a drier potting medium than wet, however you'll want to water before the soil dries out completely. Keep the potting medium slightly drier in winter and slightly moist in summer, taking care not to wet the pseudobulbs or leaves when watering. Use room temperature water. Zygos love humidity, but beware of misting them and letting the water droplets build up on the leaves as it can cause fungal infections (brown spots). Read our humidity tips here.

Feeding

During flowering feed your orchid regularly with a special fertiliser for blooming orchids. After blooming, feed with a fertiliser high in Nitrogen. Reduce nitrogen feeding in winter. Never fertilise a dry orchid as it can damage roots.

Re-potting

Re-pot every 2-3 years in spring after flowering. Use a special orchid mix. You can also split the pseudobulbs with a sharp knife.

Atrium Top Tip

Once the flowers have shrivelled, cut the flowering stem at the base. The optimal temperatures for Zygopetalum are day temperatures of 21 - 26°C and night temps of 10 - 15°C. In high summer beware of keeping it in a spot that can get above 30°C as it can cause damage. The higher the temperatures, the higher the humidity should be. If humidity levels are kept high, ensure there is good air circulation or black fungal spots can develop.

Quirky plant fact

Zygopetalum is a family of 14 currently recognised species. They are found naturally in the humid forests of South America.
