Caring for Pachira

Light

Pachira likes bright indirect light & warmth (16-24° C). Don't expose to cold draughts.

Water & humidity

The Money Tree needs infrequent, but deep watering (about twice a week in summer & once a week in winter). Make sure the water drains out the bottom of the grow pot. Water when the top 2-3cm of soil is dry. Pachira loves humidity, but this doesn't mean keeping the soil constantly damp. Rather create moisture in the air through our recommended techniques.

Feeding

The Pachira comes from the swamps, which are full of ultra nutritious rotting mud, fish poop & leaf matter, so it likes feeding on high nitrogen organic fertilisers, like Atlantic Bio Ocean, once a month.

Re-potting

Re-pot Pachira every 2 years in a well draining mixture of potting soil & peat. If the stem is braided you can continue braiding it by twisting the branches gently. Secure the braid at the top with loosely tied hessian string.

Atrium Top Tip

In summer, during its active growth season, snip off a few of the larger leaves from the bottom of the tree to encourage new growth at the top. If you want the tree to stay small, pinch back (snip off) the tallest stem. This encourages it to grow wider rather than up.

Quirky plant fact

In their native habitat the Pachira can grow up to 60 feet tall. It's showy flowers are also among the largest tree flowers in the world. The tree produces large pods containing edible nuts that taste like peanuts. The leaves and flowers are also edible - safe for pets too!
