Also known as the 'Queen of Hearts' Homalomenas are truly houseplant royalty. They're part of the same family as Philodendrons (Araceae), and have similar requirements, being pretty low maintenance. We love the way the plant holds its heart shaped leaves on proud graceful stems, like a true queen indeed.

Comes in a 12cm grow pot. Decorative pot sold separately.

Caring for Hilde

Light

Homalomenas prefer medium light. Too much direct sun and they will develop sun spots or freckles on their leaves. Too little light and newly growing leaves may turn yellow and stunted.

Water & humidity

Homalomenas like to have slightly moist soil, with the top 1-2cm drying out between watering. Don't keep them consistently damp. Yellowing leaves usually indicate too much water. Browning leaf edges indicates too little humidity. Read our humidity tips here.

Feeding

Feed with a balanced fertiliser every second month in summer.

Re-potting

Re-pot in spring if necessary. Use a well-draining potting mix with a little extra succulent mix for good drainage. You can also add peat moss to make the soil lighter. Our Hemp Super Soil will work well.

Atrium Top Tip

Try not to water your Homalomena using cold water. It prefers warm, room temperature water, especially in winter. Rememer to keep it away from cool draughts as it does not like getting too cold.

Quirky plant fact

Homalomenas primarily originate from southern Asia, with a few species indigenous to Latin America. The Tamils knew of this plant for more than 3000 years, calling it 'merugu'. They used it to treat stomach disorders. It is however mildly toxic to pets & small children if ingested.
