This orchid is not prized for its flowers so much as its metallic pinstripe leaves, making it a great year-round houseplant. Originating from the tropical regions of Asia, it grows on the forest floor in the ground, as opposed to epiphytic orchids that are found growing in trees.

Caring for Jewel

Light

Jewel orchids don't like too much direct light, preferring medium filtered light. Don't place too close to a north facing window, for example. An east facing window where it can get a few minutes of direct sun is fine, or keep it slightly away from hot bright windows.

Water & humidity

The Jewel orchid likes its soil to remain relatively moist. Let just the top layer dry before watering again. Let it dry out a bit more in winter.

Feeding

Jewel orchids are not as hungry as other orchids. You can feed 1 - 2 times during summer with a balanced plant food, topping up with a flowering plant food while the plant is starting to produce blooms.

Re-potting

This plant tends to grow outward rather than up and has a shallow root system, so you don't need a very deep pot. If it outgrows its container, re-pot to one container size up. Use regular potting soil, as this orchid is not an epiphyte, but grows in the ground. If you are prone to overwatering, add some perlite to the soil to help manage moisture levels.

Atrium Top Tip

If you don't care about the flowers, but are only after the leaves, pinch the new buds off as they form so the plant can focus its energy on those fabulous fronds. Don't let this plant be in a spot that gets below 10°C in winter.
