Gaura flowers are like dainty butterflies dancing across the garden. Native to the prairies of North America, these plants have become popular garden plants for their delicate beauty, long flowering time and the fact that they are fairly water-wise when established.

Gaura withstand heat and light frost, bouncing back readily in spring. If you live in a frost free area, they will stay green through winter, although will stop flowering.

Mature height: 80 - 90cm tall flower spikes

Mature spread: 50- 60cm

Comes in a 16cm grow pot.

Style tip: Plant among soft grasses to create a lovely country garden affect, or plant en-masse behind a low hedge, letting just the flowers show.

About Plant

Growing Gaura

Light

Full sun. Gauras perform best in full sun and need at least 4 - 6 hours a day to bloom profusely.

Water

Gauras prefer the soil to dry out between watering and are drought tolerant, although when newly planted keep them fairly moist until they become established and start filling out. If the leaves start drooping and shrivelling, the plant is thirsty.

Feeding

A good handful of compost around the plant in Spring, and a sprinkle of slow release organic pellets should more than suffice for the year.

Re-potting

Gaura can be re-potted every year to a larger container. Regular well draining potting soil will do, with added fine gravel or succulent mix to help the mixture drain well. Gauras don't transplant too well in the garden, but the best success will be had in Spring after being pruned.

Atrium Top Tip

Gaura tend to look a bit sad and twiggy in winter. Prune the stems right down in Spring to encourage new, full growth.

Quirky plant fact

Gaura are native to the southern parts of Texas State and Louisiana where they grow in the prairies. The flowers attract bees and butterflies.
