Your Alocasia will thrive in brighter (but not direct) light. Placing it near a window so it can get the best dose of sunlight will make for a happy plant! This plant will always reach for the light in any room so make sure it doesn't need to by placing it in the sunny spot from the start.
Try to keep the soil moist, these plants need these conditions so try not to let your soil dry out too much. Coming from a tropical forest, when the months get cooler, water a little less, and when it starts heating up again, water a little more. The Alocasia also likes being sprayed very regularly so mist regularly.
Alocasias are used to growing in forests with soil rich in nutrients from decaying leaf matter. Therefore they like regular feeding with organic fertiliser. They will also benefit from added 'Kraal Manure' to the soil.
As heavy feeders Alocasias quickly deplete the nutrients in their soil, and like to be re-potted annually with fresh potting mix. Add peat poss and pumice stones to the mix, this ensures the soil stays evenly moist without becoming dense. A great tip for re-potting is to ensure this is done during the warmer months only.
The trick is to keep the soil evenly moist without overwatering. You can even let the top layer of soil dry out a touch. Watch out for fungal diseases, which usually appear as dark brown or black spots on the leaves, surrounded by a yellowish rim. Cut away any infected leaves and wipe with neem oil. Keep away pests with a monthly spray of warm soapy water.
Being members of the Aroid family (Arum Lily) the flowers of the Alocasia comprise of a spadix surrounded by a green spathe.
To keep herbivores away they produce calcium oxalate crystals, which irritate the mouth. Keep away from pets & toddlers.
