Lewisia is a charming succulent-like evergreen perennial with tall sprays of flowers. It makes a perfect houseplant in a pot or grown outside in a rocky, sandy area where the soil drains well.

About Plant

Growing Lewisia

Light

Bright light by a north facing window indoors. Full sun to semi-shade outdoors.

Water & humidity

Water well keeping the plant slightly moist during flowering. However, the soil must drain well as Lewisia are susceptible to crown rot. In the wild they grow in scree, so prefer pebbly sandy soils that won't hold on to water.

Feeding

Feed once during the growing season with a balanced fertiliser.

Re-potting

Lewisia like well-draining sandy type soils and you should only use a succulent mix for pots. If your garden soil is not sandy, add some succulent mix or small gravel to the planting area. Lewisia grow well in between gravel or stones.

Atrium Top Tip

Try not to get water in the centre of the rosette as it can cause crown rot, especially in winter, but water directly into the soil. Some gardeners growing Lewisia in pots place the pot on its side during winter to help avoid water collecting in the crown of the plant. Also ensure the crown sits atop the soil level when it's planted.

Quirky plant fact

Lewisia comes in many different varieties and in Germany it's known as 'Regenbogen' plant, meaning rainbow.
