This dwarf Banana Plant is perfect for adding jungle glam to an interior, paired with a vibrant leafy wallpaper or painting. Musa doesn't actually produce fruit - it's more about beauty than bananas, making it perfect for the indoors. Banana Plants were popular indoor plants in the Victorian era and were grown in large conservatories.

The Dwarf variety will still grow to around 1,5m tall if given the right conditions. Just make sure you have a big enough spot.

Caring for Musa

Light

Bright light, Banana Plants need lots of warmth and light to thrive and need to be near a window or in a well-lit room. However the leaves can burn if exposed to too much direct sun.

Water & humidity

Banana Plants are cultivated in warm humid areas, which is what they like best. This plant will need therefore plentiful watering in hot summers when its growing, letting only the top layer dry out before topping up. In winter you can leave it to dry out 4cm down. The large leaves mean this plant transpires a lot of water during the day, so it will appreciate being kept in a humid environment. Torn leaves are a sign they are too dry. Feeding

The wonderful thing about Banana Plants is that they will put out a new leaf almost weekly in summer. All this growth requires plenty of fertiliser. Use a balaned organic fertiliser high in Nitrogen like Atlantic Bio Ocean, or a liquid feed like Seagro.

Re-potting

In the beginning you may have to re-pot every six months as the roots need space. You can remove and propagate the young 'pups' or baby plants that sprout up next to the mother plant. As heavy feeders they love a rich potting mix with added kraal manure

Atrium Top Tip

It is normal for the edges of the leaves to rip and go brown, it's almost like the plant expects its leaves to get damaged so it doesn't spend time making them tougher, but just churns out new ones. However you can help protect them by keeping them away from children & pets and giving them enough humidity.

Banana plants are not trees, but a type of perennial herb that grows from a rhizome. A cluster of bananas is called a hand, while a sngle one is called a finger.
