Olives prefer spending their days soaking up the rays with a view over the ocean - ah the life! Lucky with our warm sunny climate we can successfully grow them indoors too. If you want to bring their incredible spirit into the house, ensure they get plenty of light (at least 6 hrs a day) through a large north facing window where they can also get fresh air and good air circulation. You may find over the long term you will have to move it outside if it stops growing.
Olives do not need much water when established, and are drought tolerant. Water potted olives deeply when the soil is dry. Do not subject them to soggy soil and make sure it drains well.
Olive trees do not need much fertiliser, especially if they are not fruiting (which they won't do indoors or for the first few years of their life). Feed 1 - 2 times in summer with a balanced all purpose fertiliser.
The European Olive is slow growing compared to its cousin the African Olive & you'll only need to re-pot every couple of years. Eventually you'll have to plant it in the ground, but they can fare really well in a pot for up to a decade. Use well-draining potting soil with added gravel for drainage if you are prone to overwatering.
You can shape your olive by pruning it. Remove lower branches if you want a taller stem & lollipop effect, or pinch off the growing tips at the top of the tree if you want bushiness.
Olive Trees can reach 500 years old & develop beautiful gnarly twisted trunks over time. The oldest olive tree is found in none other than Greece, and is over 2000 years old and still produces fruit. The burnt ash of olive tree branches is a good garden fertiliser.
