Marantas are closely related to Calatheas and are some of the most striking houseplants around. Pink-red veins appear almost luminous against a lime green mid-rib, darkening to a rich emerald. This plant is low growing and will spread out forming a short bushy houseplant that will start to trail downwards.

NB: Ensure to keep your Maranta in a warm sheltered spot in winter, away from any cool draughts.

Comes in a 12cm grow pot. Decorative planters sold separately.

About Plant

Caring for Mia

Light

Medium to bright, but do not expose to direct light or the leaves will develope brown sun spots. If the colours of the leaves start fading this is also a sign the plant is getting too much light.

Water & humidity

Water often in summer, keeping the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Let the soil dry out 2-3cm down in winter. Marantas are susceptible to root rot, so don't let water sit in the tray. Mist leaves regularly for best results as they love humidity! Humidity is key to success with this plant. Read our tips here.

Feeding

Fertilise often in summer, every 2 - 4 weeks to encourage lush growth.

Re-potting

Every two years in spring. Mix regular potting soil with a good handful of peat moss and pumice stones. This mix ensures good drainage while still retaining moisture. Or use our Hemp Super Soil! Marantas can also be propoagated by cuttings and root division.

Atrium Top Tip

If the leaf starts curling it means lack of water. Brown edges mean lack of humidity.

Quirky plant fact

Marantas, like Calatheas, which are all part of the marantacea family, are known as prayer plants because at night they close their leaves as if in prayer. They originate from deep in the Amazon jungle.

Absolutely in love with my Mantra Red-Veined!! I've only had her for 2 weeks and she's already made new leaves. She also has such an interesting personality... I was really worried one day because her leaves were hanging and droopy, but after keeping an eye on her for a couple of days, I realised that she's just reacting to the weather. On warmer days her leaves hang a little and on colder days, they're all perky. I do keep her leaves moist though with a water spray bottle, she LOVES her daily bath

This beautiful plant made it all the way to Cape Town in one piece! I absolutely adore her - my photo doesn't do her justice. I followed Atrium's advice re moisture and I keep her in the bathroom where it's humid, spray her often (and liberally) and have her in her nursery pot in the green pot from Atrium, with some stones and a little water at the bottom (but not touching the roots) to keep things humid just as she likes it, and it's working - she's been having babies! I'm so pleased with her - thank you Atrium for emailing me as soon as she came back in stock.
