The rocking hairdo of the Boston Fern makes it world famous. It first made its debut in the 1920s when it became a houseplant favourite, and you've probably seen it in the background of your favourite Jazz Age movie. Arianne is an extra special variety with her lime leaves and unique variegation.

Caring for Arianne

Light

Medium filtered light is best, next to a window with a thin blind, or a few metres away from an east/north facing window. In nature, ferns are usually found in cool river valleys growing along the forest floors. They get dappled sunlight that filters through the trees. Too much sun will lead to scorching of the leaves, but a dark spot will quickly leave the fern limp and lifeless.

Water & humidity

Water regularly to keep moist. In winter let the top layer of soil dry out slightly & reduce watering. Keep the atmosphere humid. Read our humidity tips here

Feeding

Fertilise every 1-2 months in summer with a balanced organic fertiliser. All that watering will flush out much-needed nutrients. Reduce feeding in winter.

Re-potting

Re-pot every 1 - 2 years in spring using a good potting mix with added peat moss for water retention, and pumice stones or LECA to help aerate the soil and ensure proper drainage.

Atrium Top Tip

You can also increase humidity by placing the pot on a tray of pebbles with water. The water should reach just below the tops of the pebbles so the pot isn't sitting in the water.

Quirky plant fact

Nephrolepis ferns are found growing naturally all over the world. The name comes from the Greek words 'nephro' meaning a kidney, and 'lepis' meaning a scale. The term is used to describe something tall and lofty.
