Caring for Fifi

Light

Fuchsias love dappled light and semi-shade outdoors and bright light indoors for optimal flowering, however they are prone to heat stroke and need to be sheltered from the sun's hottest rays. A spot where it gets some morning sun and afternoon shade is ideal.

Water & humidity

Fuchsias like remaining slightly moist during the flowering season, which lasts throughout summer & autumn. Mature plants can dry out a bit more. Mulching with bark chips or pine needles (good for acidity) is essential for maintaining healthy moisture levels, especially when grown in a pot.

Feeding

Fuchsias enjoy regular feeding with a fertiliser that promotes flowering, like Atlantic Fruit & Flower. 

Planting & potting

Use a good potting soil, rich in nutrients (Fuchsias also like slightly acidic soil). Avoid planting into a pot that's way too big, as the plant will spend more energy prodcing roots than flowers. If re-potting, go one size up, choosing a pot that's wider rather than deeper, so the plant doeans't use unnecessary energy growing long roots. If planting in the garden ensure the soil drains well. You can also add some acid compost.

Atrium Top Tip

Pinch back spent blooms to promote flowering. You can also prune back branches where all the blooms have died off. Fuchsais are not frost tolerant. Bring it inside in winter if it's in a pot, or cover with frost cover.

Quirky plant fact

There are more than 100 Fuchsia species, found in sub-tropical areas around the world. Fuchsias can live for hundreds of years in the ideal habitat. The oldest one that still lives was planted in 1899.
