You'll fall head over heels with this adorable small fern with velvety heart shaped leaves.

First identified in 1859, Heart Leaf Ferns are native to Southeast Asia, and are also epiphytes, meaning they grow on trees as well. In Asian folklore the plant was used to treat diabetes. Modern research has indeed found it to be effective in lowering blood glucose levels. See, it's more than just a pretty face!

Caring for Hilde

Light

Medium filtered light is best. In nature, Heart Leaf Ferns are usually found in cool river valleys, where they get dappled sunlight that filters through the trees. Too much sun will lead to scorching of the leaves. They also prefer temperatures between 15°C - 23°C, so avoid placing near a window that gets very hot, or where it can get a cool draught in winter.

Water & humidity

Water every 1 - 3 days in summer to keep moist, especially when it is hot. In winter let the top layer of soil dry out slightly & reduce watering. Keep the atmosphere humid with a spritzer, humidifier, or place plant by the kitchen or bathroom sink. Read our humidity tips here

Feeding

Fertilise every 1-2 months in summer with a balanced organic fertiliser at less than half the recommended dose.

Re-potting

Re-pot every 1 - 2 years in spring using a good potting mix with added peat moss for water retention, and pumice stones or LECA to help aerate the soil and ensure proper drainage. You can also split the plant into two using a sharp knife through the rhizome.

Atrium Top Tip

You can also increase humidity by placing the pot on a tray of pebbles with water. The water should reach just below the tops of the pebbles so the pot isn't sitting in the water.

Quirky plant fact

Heart Leaf Ferns are dimorphic, meaning they have sterile and fertile fronds. The fertile fronds are borne on longer stems that radiate outward. You can see the brown sporangia (capsules containing reproductive spores) on the underside of the fertile fronds.
