Hydrangeas prefer semi-shade where they can get a few hours of sunlight a day, preferably morning sun and afternoon shade. If planted in deep shade they won't flower as profusely. If they get too much sun they can scorch, turning brown & crispy. Beware of planting Hydrangeas under big trees, as the more aggressive tree roots will sap the nutirents & moisture away.
Hydrangeas need to be well watered. Water deeply so it reaches the roots. Droopy leaves mean the plant is thirsty. Established Hydrangeas can go for longer periods without a drink.
Hydrangeas should be fertilised in Spring at the beginning of the growing season and again in summer, using a slow release fertiliser. There are also special Hydrangea fertilisers on the market to promote blooming. Fertilising a Hydrangea will not cause it to bloom. If a Hydrangea is not blooming year after year there is an underlying problem, for example it's not getting enough light or water.
Hydrangeas enjoy good loamy soil that drains well. The best time to re-pot or transplant is when they are dormant, once the leaves have fallen off in winter.
There are many wives tales about getting the best blooms from a Hydrangea. Some swear by using extra Iron (Fe), which is also a good micronutrient to prevent yellowing foliage. When pruning, don't prune all the old wood as this is what keeps on flowering as new stems mature.
The colourful flowers are not petals, but sepals, which are modified leaves that protect the flower bud. The leaves of Hydrangeas are slightly toxic when ingested, so keep away from nibbling children or pets.
