These are some of the fullest and most exquisitely perfect Osaka ferns we've had! Anathi is a pure fresh burst of greenery with her masses of frilly apple-green fronds. Just like her sister Ariel, in nature she's found hanging out high in the nooks of jungle trees growing naturally as an epiphyte – hence her name ‘Bird’s Nest Fern’. Anathi loves dressing up and wears her fronds with aplomb!

About Plant

Caring for Anathi

Light

Low to medium. Anathi lives under the jungle canopy, so does not enjoy direct sunlight. If her leaves start fading in colour to pale yellow from their bright apple green, it's likely she's getting too much sun exposure.

Water & humidity

Water deeply when the very top layer of soil is dry to the touch. Most ferns enjoy moist, but not waterlogged soil. Anathi is slightly more forgiving of the occasionally forgetful houseplant owner. She tolerates lower humidity than most ferns, but still enjoys a regular misting, or the edges of her leaves will turn brown.

Feeding

Bird's Nest Ferns like small regular feedings. Feed monthly with a small amount of organic fertiliser at half dose. Too much will cause yellow spots on the leaves.

Re-potting

Epiphytic plants grow with a minimum amount of organic material, and will continue growing above the soil. Only re-pot if their weight tips the pot over. Never pot epiphytic plants with normal potting soil! Use a loose, aerated and friable soil that drains well. Mix in orchid mix, which is great for epiphytic plants.

Atrium Top Tip

Snails & beetles find Anathi rather delicious. Turn off the lights and close windows at night if pests become a problem and spray leaves with an organic pesticide or with a dilution of 1tsp mint oil in a liter of water.

Quirky plant fact

The beetles are on to something. Apparently the sprouts of the Bird's Nest Fern are indeed yummy. In Taiwan they are fried with chilli and garlic.
