Just hanging out

Amy, just like her sister Ariel, enjoys hanging out high in the nooks of jungle trees – Hence her name ‘Bird’s Nest Fern’. Amy's fronds are different to her sister's in that they form a double midrib at the end, giving her added personality.

She’s a mysterious lady, able to survive without soil (epiphytic), but that only adds to her intrigue. She’s also just as happy in a pot, pouting and showing off her glossy fronds.

Caring for Amy

Light

Low to medium. Amy lives under the jungle canopy, so does not enjoy direct sunlight. If her leaves start fading in colour to pale yellow from their bright apple green, it's likely she's getting too much sun exposure.

Water & humidity

Water when the very top layer of soil is dry to the touch. Most ferns enjoy moist, but not waterlogged soil. Ariel is slightly more forgiving of the occasionally forgetful houseplant owner. She tolerates lower humidity than most ferns.

Feeding

Bird's Nest Ferns like small regular feedings. Feed monthly with a small amount of organic fertiliser at half dose. Too much will cause yellow spots on the leaves.

Re-potting

Epiphytic plants grow with a minimum amount of organic material, and will continue growing above the soil. Only re-pot if their weight tips the pot over. Never pot epiphytic plants with normal potting soil! Use a loose, aerated and friable soil that drains well. Mix in orchid mix, which is great for epiphytic plants.

Atrium Top Tip

Snails & beetles find Amy rather delicious. Turn off the lights and close windows at night if pests become a problem and spray leaves with an organic pesticide or with a dilution of 1tsp mint oil in a liter of water.

Quirky plant fact

The beetles are on to something. Apparently the sprouts of the Bird's Nest Fern are indeed yummy. In Taiwan they are fried with chilli and garlic.
