Calathea concinna 'Freddie'
Regular price R 189.00 Save R -189.00Freddie is one of the tallest Calatheas. With his strikingly patterned leaves propped up on slender stalks he's a most handsome fellow. In the wild, Freddie is commonly found under the rainforest trees of Brazil. His extended family is called Marantaceae (meaning arrow root) because their elongated leaves are designed to catch falling raindrops and funnel them down the stem into the roots.

Medium to bright. Tolerates lower light conditions
Water 1-2 times a week in summer. Wait for the soil to dry out about 2cm down before watering again. Calatheas are susceptible to root rot, so don't let water sit in the tray. Keep humidity levels high (get tips on how to do this here) for best results.
Once a month with a sachet of organic Canola Meal
Every two years in spring. Calatheas don't like to be pot bound, but to have plenty of room. Use a well draining mixture of 1/3 potting soil, 1/3 peat moss and 1/3 pumice.
If the leaf starts curling it means lack of water. Brown edges mean lack of humidity.
Calatheas symbolise new beginnings. This meaning comes from the saying to ‘turn over a new leaf’, which is what the plant does when closing up at night and opening again in the morning.
