This unique fern is pretty wacky, but who doesn't love something a little different? The tall upright curly stems have an intensely green colour that will brighten up your interior, and warm up your heart.

Caring for Zonke

Light

Medium, indirect light. In nature ferns live under the forest canopy, so do not enjoy direct sunlight. If the leaves start fading in colour to pale yellow from their bright apple green, or getting crispy brown it could be getting too much sun. However, ferns do need enough light to keep growing and looking lush, they just don't want to get sunburnt.

Water & humidity

Water when the very top layer of soil is dry to the touch, keeping the soil evenly moist, but not soggy or drenched. Most ferns enjoy moist, but not waterlogged soil. Brown, crispy leaf edges means humidity/soil moisture is too low. Read our humidity tips here.

Feeding

Ferns like small regular feedings. Feed monthly with a small amount of organic fertiliser at half dose. Too much will cause yellow spots on the leaves.

Re-potting

Green Flame Ferns can grow in soil, or the can be epiphytic. This means they need a minimum amount of organic material, and will continue growing above the soil. Only re-pot if their weight tips the pot over. Use an aerated and friable soil that drains well, like African Violet potting soil that holds moisture, but drains well, or add orchid mix to your potting soil.

Atrium Top Tip

Due to this plant's moisture loving nature, fungal infections can become a problem. Avoid watering directly into the centre of the plant, as trapped water here can cause fungal infections, rather water directly onto the soil. Trim any dead overcrowded leaves to encourage new growth and good air flow, which will discourage fungal disease and rot.
